How to host a cookie exchange

A cookie exchange is easy to host. Each guest bakes one type of cookie, and everyone goes home with a box of different ones. A few clear rules are all you need.

Choose your guest count

Eight to twelve bakers works well. With more than that, the baking gets to be a lot of work for each guest.

Decide how many cookies each person bakes

A common approach is six cookies for each guest. With 10 bakers, each person brings about five dozen. To make it lighter, ask for four each.

Stop people baking the same thing

Have everyone claim a cookie on a shared list before they shop. Once one is taken, others can pick something different.

Set up on the day

Clear a large table and arrange each batch on its own plate with a name card. List the main allergens beside each. Put out boxes or bags, then have people walk around the table and fill them.

Add a little extra

Coffee, hot cocoa and a few savory snacks give people a break from sugar. Some hosts also run a vote for the best cookie.
