Tips for your bbq or cookout

Keep the grill to one person

Agree who is on grill duty, so everyone else can bring sides without worrying about it.

Bring more ice than seems sensible

Ice runs out quickly on a hot day, so it has its own spot on the list.

Include a non-meat option

Veggie burgers or grilled vegetables mean everyone can eat from the grill.

Watch food in the heat

Keep cold dishes in a cooler until serving. Food safety guidance says not to leave perishables out for over an hour when it is above 90°F.

Common questions

What do you bring to a BBQ?

Sides, chips, dessert, drinks and ice are the usual requests, with the host often covering the meat.

How many burgers do I need?

The list starts with one spot for every eight guests, assuming each person brings a pack. Adjust it for your crowd.

Does this work for a Fourth of July cookout?

Yes. Change the event name, and the same list works for any summer holiday.
